DUSEM examines the person, substance, environment, purpose, and aftermath together. There is no magic first step and no tidy finish line.
Know the substance, the source, the interactions, and what you do not know.
Understand what the use is meant to change, create, avoid, or escape.
Account for mindset, expectations, mental health, and current capacity.
Treat the physical and social environment as part of the drug experience.
Think in amounts, potency, timing, accumulation, and individual variability.
Route, pace, equipment, and combinations can radically change the risk.
Plan for sleep, nutrition, hydration, support, and the aftermath of use.
Look back honestly, update the system, and stop outsourcing outcomes to luck.
